How To Apply For Section 8 in the Kansas City Area

Where:

Housing Authority of Kansas City

If applicant is homebound, contact the HAKC for application instructions.

Bring the following documentation with you:

  1. Picture ID.
  2. Social Security Card or print out of application for all household members.
  3. Birth Certificates for all members of the household (if out-of-state there is an affidavit to sign that allows a client 6 months to obtain Birth Certificates).
  4. Proof of Income:

    • A signed letter from an employer on company letterhead which must include the following: address, phone for 3rd party verification of how long the applicant has been employed, amount of hours worked per pay period, hourly rate or salary.
    • Social Security Award letter not more than 30 days old. (may need to include a letter explaining why client is not receiving maximum benefit, e.g., paying back over payments).
    • Public Assistance Award letter not more than 30 days old.
    • Other income must be verified, e.g., rental property, dividends, etc.
  5. Certification of Disability: The Housing Authority of Kansas City will place the client higher on the waiting list if the client claims a preference due to disability.

    • HAKC will require proof of disability.

      DO NOT DISCLOSE THE NATURE OF THE DISABILITY


  6. Proof of Live-In Aide if applicable.
Police Report: The Housing Authority of Kansas City will ask a client to sign a release and get a report directly from the Police Department. Applicants may be denied housing if there are outstanding warrants, judgements, a history of hate or sex crimes, or a history of drug related crimes.
